Computer Aided Drafting for Theatre
Vectorworks Rendering
Computer Aided Drafting for Theatre is a course I took in Spring 2015. This specific assignment was tailored towards learning how to work in Vectorworks. We were to select a play and create the set in the MSU Denver black box theatre.
My first thought was to create something in the round, meaning that the audience would be seated around all sides of the stage. My next thought was what plays did I know that I could create a set in the round and not damage the intent of the play; my thoughts went to The Tempest by William Shakespeare. I created a rough sketch on the back of a different ground plan within five minutes of discovering what the project was, my thought process only being a few seconds. From there, I replicated the sketch in Vectorworks. The base platform, as well as the painted stage, is an octagon. Four sides face the isles the actors enter and exit from and have steps. The four sides that face the audience are masked by "rocks". Each side has a slight rake to the facing. The top platform that supports the three arches and the single broken arch is a square with sides raked enough to allow for the actors to climb it with relative ease. The edges created by the raked facing are both masked and emphasized by rocks. One of the arches is broken to create irregularity in the set as well as to hint at ruins. |

Studio Foundations: 3D
Grand Proposal
One of the projects in Studio Foundations: 3D was to propose a large, 3D art piece that was not limited by money nor resources. From past topics, the Blue Mustang at the Denver International Airport (DIA) was at the edge of my thoughts when this assignment was presented. To me, the Blue Mustang doesn't represent Denver well, and neither welcomes or gives a pleasant farewell. I wanted to create something that would be seen well, not only from the roads, but the air as well.
Blue Mustang is located where Peña Boulevard turns from west and east to north and south. My proposed sculpture would take the place where the Blue Mustang rests, using the Blue Mustang as the center anchor for my monument. The soldiers would be the facing edge welcoming people to DIA, aligning the sculpture to be seen by all three roads in that given location while also providing a unique view for all three roads.
The monument is meant to be unpainted garnet. Garnet is a stone quarried here in Colorado and painting the garnet - while separating quite a few of the pieces from one another - would be a bit overwhelming. The size of the sculpture would help make the piece viewable even without paint. Due to working in a program I was learning during the class, I was unable to mimic garnet.

The monument itself is huge. The initial base is 10 feet high, elevating a large portion of the monument. The base itself is a massive C to be visible from the air. The little man to the left of the soldiers is a reference mark of 6 feet. The farthest edges of the C are 110 feet apart. The tallest soldier is 23 feet tall, the shortest 19 feet tall. The top of the mountain is 44 feet 10 inches from the ground and the airplane is 55 feet 7 inches from the ground. The rock climber, the hiker, the snowboarder, and the skier would all be around 8 feet in height. The bucking bronco is the same size as the Blue Mustang.
Hierarchical scale is only used on the three soldiers. The largest is for the Air Force, the middle is for the Army, and the smallest is for the Air Force Academy. This order was chosen due to the Air Force having a very large presence in Colorado. The Air Force Academy is smallest because it is a stepping stone into the Air Force. It is not meant to be belittled. It is meant to merely signify that it is here and is part of the Army and Air Force’s presence.
On the other flat surface that is pointed out where the mountain ends abruptly would be an engraving of some sort that would depict an observatory and stars, something easily seen from the roads.
For me, this represented Colorado more than the Blue Mustang. It not only shows what Colorado is known for, but things many people may not. It is meant to bring a lot of aspects of Colorado into good light and to give well wishes for safe travels for those traversing Peña Blvd.
